Help Needed!

I’m currently writing my second novel titled Queen of a Gentleman’s Game, the first in a three-book series, and in it I’m taking on the greatest challenge of my writing career so far: writing in first-person from the perspective of a woman.

I knew from the onset this would not be easy. It’s a thriller set mainly in the early 1970s that follows the rise of Kay Jordan, a strong woman from...

The Best Time of My Life

It's late and we've just gotten home from flying in from Barbados, but I've got to write all this down now while it's fresh on my mind. From January 3 to now, this has unequivocally been the best time of my life.

If you read my last post, you know that I married my best friend, Courtney Moser, on Friday, January 3. It was a small, beautiful ceremony at the renovated Providence Cotton Mill in Maiden, NC with just my parents, her mother and family friend, and our two kids, Avett and Kynlee,...

The Last Year or So, and What’s to Come in 2020

2019 was a year I will never forget. I read an article recently on The New York Times about how the "2010s were the end of normal"...and 2019 undoubtedly put a resounding exclamation point on that statement. I won't get in much detail, but for was a good thing.

For what it's worth, I feel like things got better from 2010 to 2020, as indicative in this photo below. Since 2018, though, life has shown me greater things than I ever thought imaginable.

Following a very trying...

A Heart-to-Heart with All of You

For the last year, I have thought about what I would say to you today. It's the day before my debut novel releases to the world -- the day before the biggest dream I've ever imagined is realized. And so now...I want to have a heart-to-heart with you.

For the past few months, I've received more encouragement and support than I could have ever imagined. You've helped me live this dream so far...I cannot thank you enough. From the likes and comments on my posts to the heart-felt...

After much discussion and deliberation, the book will not release September 24. Instead, it'll release July 12.

My editor has been very complimentary of the novel, and since it is complete, I'm ready. My publisher is as well, so there is no need to wait. The project is well ahead of schedule, and all of us are ready to go. A New Requiem will be available at major book retailers everywhere Friday, July 12.

If you want to pre-order and make sure you get your copy that day,...

Want the Book Early? Message Me for a Free Copy!

It has been too long! A crazy month has led to this moment where, for mostly therapeutic purposes, I find myself back here writing. I have missed it for sure.

In the meantime, I've been doing some exciting things, though, including but not limited to perhaps the best sports experience I've ever had in my life: a Stanley Cup Playoff 2nd round series-clinching win at home for the Carolina Hurricanes over the New York Islanders. What a night, especially with Courtney, who you see in my feature...

“It’s only a dream until you write it down. Then it becomes a goal.”: Emmitt Smith, San Diego, and Returning to the West Coast

I'm sitting here in the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, California, where I return for the first time since 2015 when I was here for the Winner's Celebration event for Farm Bureau Insurance. San Diego is just a beautiful as it was then, though I've learned twice now that sunny Southern California isn't as warm as one would think this time of spring. While I'd love to be outside, I am instead seated comfortably inside, away from a brisk cold wind that has...

“True Friends Never Forget”: The Real-Life Influence of My Debut Novel’s Character Dwight Kerry

I could choose many words to describe Dwight Berry, but I'll start by noting the first that comes to mind: selfless.

Indeed, Dwight Berry was one of the most selfless people I've ever known. He passed away in July 2018, but I can probably speak for so many people when I say this: he will never be forgotten.

His constant willingness to help me, and others, is what I will most remember him for, but make no mistake about it: his presence in a room was commanding, and his talents...

The Common Misperception of What It Means to “Change the World”

How many people have you ever heard say, or imply, that they want to do something to "change the world?" I once worked in the admissions office of my alma mater, Chowan University, and I cannot tell you how many students I met who said they aspired to do something in their life that would "change the world."

Naturally, people want to make an impact. They want what they do to make a difference. However you want to say it, many people want to spend their life doing something that can "change...
